CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and TORONTO, Canada — February 4, 2008 — Endeca Technologies, Inc., an information access software company, and The University of Toronto announced today that The University of Toronto Library has selected the Endeca Information Access Platform (IAP) to serve as the foundation for a new resource-discovery system that will support an enhanced user experience across a broad range of information resources.

As the third-largest university library in North America, the University of Toronto Library's mission is to foster the search for knowledge and understanding in the university and the wider community. This new application will take advantage of a range of information access capabilities available in the Endeca IAP, including Guided Navigation, search, Content Spotlighting, and more. Specifically, this initiative will facilitate the discovery of resources not only from the University of Toronto Library's 15,000,000-volume print collection — the largest in Canada — but also from 12,000,000 articles in more than 8,700 electronic journals, from 150,000,000 citations in nearly 200 abstract and index databases, and from over 100,000 full-text electronic books available through the Ontario Council of University Libraries Scholars Portal services. This implementation will draw together into a single framework a vast array of information that supports the research, teaching, and learning activities.

The project, slated to start this month, will be the most extensive Endeca project of its kind in the library space to date.

University of Toronto chief librarian Carole Moore says, "This initiative will greatly enhance the student experience by drawing together information resources that previously required the use of many different systems. The Endeca IAP will allow us to offer a single, uniform approach to information discovery."
